One Million Bones Project at DGS

DGS students are currently being given the opportunity to get involved in this social arts project - there will be clay available to make a 'bone' for the project on DEMO night in the art room.  It is a wonderful and meaningful way to contribute to your DGS community - JOIN US!

'We are collecting artwork bones for a collaborative installation of 1,000,000 bones on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. from June 8th-10th, 2013. This installation will serve as a collaborative site of conscience to remember victims and survivors, and as a visible petition to raise awareness of the issue and call upon our government to take much needed and long overdue action.'

A Special Opportunity for 6th Grade - Introducing 'EPIC ARTS' by RedLine Gallery

The 6th grade class in the current specials rotation has been chosen to participate in the 'Epic Arts' program provided by RedLine Gallery.  This program partners a local artist with a class of students who collaborate to produce an art project to be exhibited at RedLine Gallery with a special focus on arts and social justice education.

The students are working on their individual pieces which they will bring together to make a mixed-media installation in the gallery.  (Click on images to view larger)

Currently the 6th Graders are working with artist/designer Matt Scobey (pictured above).  You can find more information about him and his work here:        http://cargocollective.com/mattscobey

This is a great opportunity for the students, who will have their work exhibited in a contemporary art gallery with an opening celebration December 8th - all DGS community welcome.  More details to follow!  In the mean-time here is a link to RedLine Gallery and its community projects - really worth checking out! www.redlineart.org

Salt Dough Recipe - from Miss Chung

2 c flour
1 c salt
1 c water
(I also added liquid watercolor and a little extra flour to give the dough color but you could also use pastry dye or just paint the white dough after it dries.)

Mix the flour and salt first, then add water and mix, knead until desired consistency of dough is formed.  You can stick the dough to paper or cardboard when wet and elastic.  Dries in 48 hours but be warned, dried salt dough can be brittle and easy to break.

Have fun!   Great for use with 'perla' beads (or any kind of beads really!)

Notes to Learn! - First Grade with Mr Aranow

For music theory in First Grade this week, the class is learning the symbols for the
Quarter note, Eighth Note, Eighth Notes (connected by a 'bar') & the Quarter Rest.

The kiddo's are learning how to write the notes, and how to use Rhythm Reading Syllables to read-aloud the notes with rhythm.  For example, 1/4 note "ta" (tah) & 1/8th note "ti" (tee).

First Grader Allison with her 1/8th notes.

Cohen's 1/4 notes.

P.E. Focus on Safety - Be Nice - Be Safe - Have Fun!

For the first week of a new Specials Rotation the focus is on safety and team building in PE with Mr Parker, so the kiddo's learn to keep each other safe while having fun as well as learning great skills!

Three Simple Rules.

Students having fun while also learning appropriate 'tagging' behavior,  taking care not to play too rough and hurt and each other, practicing looking where they are running and avoiding collisions.  OR in other words  it's "TAG" not "THWACK"!
