First Grade Field Trip to DADs landfill and Waste Management Recycle Center

WOW!  How long does it take a Diaper to break-down?

A coke can?

Last week first grade students went on a field trip to DADs landfill out in Aurora.  It was pretty amazing, and not stinky!  We saw appliances ready to be recycled.  Wood and organic materials about to be made into compost.  We saw curious pipes coming out of the landfill, harvesting the stinky harmful gasses that are made when trash breaks down to generate ENERGY out of bio-mass!  The landfill currently harvests enough energy to power 2,500 homes and could potentially double this amount.  At the recycle center first graders toured the educational booths and learnt about the processes of recycling.  They learnt that large magnets separate metals from combined recycling, air blows paper products and magnets repel aluminum; this is how our waste gets separated.

First Grade students taking apart e-waste, discovering just how much sharp and dangerous stuff there is behind those computer screens!

Did you know that # 2 and #3 plastics can be recycled into T-SHIRTS!   Its true!

Safety first!
